Chat Reel: Dan Marino

"I am very comfortable with my decision to retire."

Latest: Wednesday August 30, 2000 09:21 PM

Dan Marino Dan Marion retired as the NFL's all-time leading passer. AP

Dan Marino recently chatted with CNNSI.com users about the NFL and joining HBO's Inside the NFL. A transcript of the Wednesday, August 30 chat session follows:

CNNSI Host: Welcome to our NFL chat with Dan Marino. Welcome Dan!
Dan Marino: Thank you!

From Funboy in Washington D.C.: What is harder the TV business or the football business?
Dan Marino: For me I am not sure yet. This is my first experience in broadcasting. I have a certain comfort level in football and hope I can get that level in broadcasting.

From BruceWayne: Hi Dan, my question, what is your preparation like for your new gig on HBO?
Dan Marino: Preparation is trying to watch as many games as I can. I am online as much as possible. Trying to get as much information as I can about what is going on in the league.

From Scott Alexander in Weston, Fla.: I had the pleasure of attending the sold out tribute last Wednesday. What was your take on the incredible evening? Finally, as a season ticket holder since prior to your pro career, thank you so much for the incredible moments and memories.
Dan Marino: Well that hits it right on the head -- an incredible evening for me and my family. That many fans showing up, Dolphin management, some 55,000 fans and the ex-players and some opponents -- it was great night, and to be there with 55,000 fans that I played in front of for all those years. I hope they had as good a time as I did.

From Bucky: Who do you think will win the AFC East this year?
Dan Marino: Well, I am going to jump on the bandwagon of the IN Colts like everyone else. I think they are in a great position to not only win the AFC East but also the Super Bowl.

From Jason Cole in Alexandria, Va.: What do you think of the decision to start Jay Fiedler over Damon Huard? Do you think his tendency to take too many sacks hurt Huard's chances?
Dan Marino: I don't agree with the decision. Damon won five games in six starts. That alone and Jay Fiedler not playing in the preseason is the reason I feel that Damon should start. And yes, at times Damon does take too many sacks but they are coaching him to do that.

From Dlbags: Who of the young NFL quarterbacks do you like the best? And why?
Dan Marino: I consider Payton Manning. He will continue to be a star in the league for many years. I think Daunte Culpepper, in time, will be a good player because he has so much talent, but that will be a learning process over many years.

From Joe: Hey Dan, Are you going to miss playing the NY Jets because you seem to always have good games against them?
Dan Marino: Definitely! Is that a good answer? I will miss N.Y. and miss the Jets and miss playing in general because I love the game so much.

From Christopher M Benoit in Albany N.Y.: Dan, could you every see yourself back in football in either an ownership capacity or as a coach?
Dan Marino: Yes, I think it is a dream of mine someday to be a part of a team -- maybe the Miami Dolphins sometime. I doubt that I would want to be a coach, but I think any player that has played as long as I have, and loves the game this much, would love to run a team.

Matt B: Do you think Ryan Leaf will finally live up to all that potential?
Dan Marino: I think everybody deserves a second chance and Ryan gets a second chance. He has plenty of talent I have seen him throw the ball before. He has a 'big league' arm. And I personally look for him to have a good year.

From Hey: Dan, have you considered entering politics? It would be great to have you run for Congress. Has Governor Jesse Ventura's achievements made a favorable impression on you now that you have retired from professional sports?
Dan Marino: I have never really been very political nor have any desire to get into politics, although I would try to help if it were the right cause, I would get behind it to help someone improve a situation in government.

From Jeff in Florida: How would you compare the Cowboys' offense to the Rams' offense? Do you think the Cowboys will put a lot of points up this year?
Dan Marino: Joey Gallaway will he a big help because he is a deep threat with great speed, and Troy being more comfortable with the offense that he was used to running for years -- that will help. But no, they do not have as much talent as St Louis.

From Miami: Will you ever do what Reggie White did? As in go back to football if a team needs you?
Dan Marino: You never say never. But I doubt it very seriously. I am very comfortable with my decision to retire.

From Wes Hello Dan, you were one heck of a quarterback. Just wondering how close you were to Derrick Thomas and how his loss will affect the Chiefs this year?
Dan Marino: I knew Derrick pretty well. I think his loss is devastating to the team as a whole and he will be very hard to replace.

CNNSI Host: That's all the time we have today with Dan Marino. Thanks for joining us Dan and we'll enjoy watching you Thursday at 8:00 p.m. EDT on HBO's Inside the NFL.
Dan Marino: Thank you! I will need all the help I can get.
