U.S., Canada women to play series
CHICAGO (AP) -- The U.S. women's national soccer team will play its first domestic match of 2001 against Canada on July 3 at Blaine, Minn. The match will be televised live by ESPN. The longtime rivals will play a two-game Independence Day series. On June 30 in Toronto, the Americans will play the Canadians in a match preceded by a game featuring the under-19 women's teams of the two nations. Those squads are preparing for the first-ever FIFA U-19 Women's World Championships, which will be staged in Canada in 2002.
The U.S. women have not played a domestic game since Dec. 17, 2000, when they tied Japan 1-1 in Phoenix. Although the United States and Canada have played each other 26 times, the Independence Day Series carries added spark because the Americans are 0-2-1 since a 21-game winning streak over Canada that ended last year.
