Hostetler to take year off to care for son Posted: Friday July 02, 1999 10:05 AM
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Former West Virginia quarterback Jeff Hostetler says he will take this year off from football and probably retire because of a serious injury suffered by his son in an ATV accident, according to broadcast reports. Tyler Hostetler, 8, and a 9-year-old friend rolled the ATV on private property two weeks ago in Monongalia County. The younger Hostetler was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown with a spinal cord injury. He has been transferred to a Morgantown rehabilitation center wearing a head brace, the Dominion Post of Morgantown reported. Hostetler has not commented on his son's injury. Hostetler, a hero in the New York Giants victory over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV, played last year with the Washington Redskins but had his season cut short with a knee injury. The 15-year veteran is currently a free agent. The Tennessee Titans had been looking at Hostetler as a possible backup to quarterback Steve McNair.
